I have a new love in my love, and its name is called Arrow, otherwise known as Flecha. I call it Mi Flecha de Amor - my arrow of love - our cult's creator is sent down from the ethers - Dresser Johnson - a genius font and graphic designer who lives in my borough - Brooklyn! You can also join the cult if you order the arrow ring from his site.
Arrow Ring remind us the most simple thing we have forgotten in the West because we we think we are so "developed" over the "global south" - the "third world" or the "developing world" or the animal world even. Arrow Rings reminds us that we are beings that interact with objects and our objects interact with us.
We cannot begin to differentiate between nature and the social, and to me Arrow Ring represents a reminder to the kind of hyrbridity that all objects, humans, animals and things embody: states of impurity, states of wavering, essentially states of hyrbidity. In Latour's book We have Never BEen Modern, he criticizes modernity's project that forces our world into categories of pure states. He reminds us that there is no such thing as the dichotomy of "pure subject" or "pure object," which is a human-made a power dynamic that fools us into thinking that humans are pure subjects with pure autonomy over all objects. A human is never just a subject and a thing is never just an object - all are in states of hybridity and it is only until we understand this can we comprehend our world in a more holistic manner. One of my favorite quotes from Latours's books could come straight out of a Zen Buddhist meditation:
Nothing is, by itself, either reducible or irreducible to anything else. Never by itself, but always through the mediation of another (page 113)
Arrow ring remind us that we cannot reduce ourselves to just purely human subject - neither can we reduce arrow ring to purely object. This arrow ring is a hyrbid object/subject. It acts and is acted upon. It points and is pointed to. It directs and is directed upon. We cannot with the arrow as present in our lives - on our hands - deny the separation of subject and object - it becomes one with the subject and it is subjected upon as it becomes a subject in itself. Arrow Ring has a life of it's own.
As Latour reminds us, we humans have learned how to represent our objects and how to speak for objects - and we forget in the process of assigning and forcing signifiers upon objects that they too can speak for us and to us and act independently from us. For example, we have learned to use computers for many purposes - we have learned to create codes and assign meaning to programming codes, but codes can also speak for itself and act upon us - this is freaky to think about - but think about this in terms of a disease - a disease is a cell that carries genetic code. We assume "diseases" mean something - for example we assume that cancer carries social and physical meaning - such as death, decay, decomposition- but cancer cells can also speak for themselves because they have their own intentions of creating life and the disease you will see at times creates a new life in people. How often do you hear, "I now understand life in a few way having survived my cancer?" This is a good example of how humans and non-humans interact with each other and of how subjects are never purely subjects. The power dichotomy between human and non-human is a dynamic that has long been understood by non-Western traditions - the symbiosis of nature and humans is much better understood by non-Western religions - this is why so much of Latour's writing for me actually reads like buddhist meditations.
Back to Mi Flecha de Amor - it is a reminder to recognize the ancient spiritualities of our hybrid states - where we are nature and natures are us. We just have forgotten this in our times because we think that humans have this power to create technology - to create objects - to create machines and factories - to create "things" that we have complete power over. Arrow Ring reminds us that it is never just here or there, or that way - but rather it is all relational. There is no north or south - or east or west - these are all modern inventions - and what better invention than the arrow ring to remind us that it's all bullshit. You have never lost perspective neither will you ever find it. it's all relational.
an ode to the beauty of the arrow ring
oh thee Virginita de Guadlaupe - the most profound human object created - who is the signifier?
the pointee has become the pointer - the arrow shows the way to the post-modern self - or is the arrow a contemporary critique of the specific - the pointed ?
or has the assemblages of non-linear thinking revealed itself as an arrow of unveiled narcissism -
a directive pointer to the unrestrained atelier of unrequited pre-freudian desires?
up yours says arrow
apropos capitalistic forms - the arrow is actually a statement against consumeristic desire -
it says by pointing - that despite all of our choices - all of our visual schizophrenia - the arrow says -
LOOK AT THIS ONE THING - THIS IS IT - DOn't LOOK ELSEWHERE -
it is an anti-choice statement making the choice for you - it chooses for your eyes the visual primacy
it forces you to look and focus on ONE THING in THAT MOMENT -
so zen - the arrow brings us to nirvana by repetitive pointive practice -
no interpretation is needed when you have an arrow ring - it implies direction, security, stableness, groundedness and placedness- it is the anti-thesis to post-modern fuckheads who say we are lost to a world of cosumeristic cannibalism.
The arrow pointing tell you that you have nothing except for this one thing to look at - CAN YOU DO IT?
but underlying all this - the arrow can also serve as the most egotistical, materialistic, narcisstic tool ever -
it says look at MY things, look at things I FIND interesting -
my my my - my things....look at ME - me posing, me waking, me thinking, me walking -
this is the most transformative contemporary creation created by creators of creationdom.
thanks to dresserjohnson. contemporary life has new meaningvisual digital production is awake with arrows - a new movement is on the horizon -
and the arrows have revealed the direction we are moving in....

wow. Â for once in my life I am speechless. Â the Pointee sits out the act of Pointing toward the obvious within your manifesto: genius. Â I promise to always acknowledge the postmodern conduct, the ever-changing signifier of our arrow love function and hereby declare my object my life my vision wherein i am forcing one to see what i want them to see, is simply my newfound obsession in a world where symbol is everything. Â symbolism. i am addicted.
